Satire VI by Juvenal
Surely you used to be sane. Postumus, are you taking a wife?
Tell me what Fury, what snakes, have driven you to this
Madness?
Can you be under her thumb, while ropes are so cheap and so
many,
When there are windows wide open and high enough to jump
down from,
While the Aemilian bridge is practically in your back yard?
──Women Defamed and Women Defended, edited by Alcuin Blamires with Karen Pratt and C. W. Mark
你為什麼甘願接受她的頤指氣使,當外面賣的繩子多到不行也便宜得不得了;
* Marcus Cassianius Latinius Postumus was a western Roman emperor of provincial origin. He usurped power from Gallienus around the year 260 [note 1] and assumed the title and powers of emperor in the western provinces of Gaul, Germania, Britannia and Hispania, thereby founding what scholars have dubbed the Gallic Empire. He ruled for the better part of ten years before he was murdered by his own troops.
* Aemilian is a Roman senator who had ruled for only 88 days. The bridge where he died was afterwards known as the pons sanguinarius, the "bridge of blood".
