在Piers Plowman裡描述的七原罪中,「貪吃」是個很特別的角色。作者用一個特別的視角描述「貪吃」在民風保守而且物資並不充足的中古世紀,其實並不只是一個與別人無關的壞習慣。所謂「貪吃」也代表著身而為人是一個壞榜樣,並且很有可能會讓已經飽受饑餓的人失去可以溫飽一頓的機會:
“I, Glutton,” he began, “and admit I’m guilty of this:
Sworn by God’s soul and his sides…
When there was no need for it nine hundred times.
And over-stuffed myself at supper and sometimes at midday,
So that I, Glutton, got rid of it all before I’d gone a mile,
And spoiled what might what have been saved and dispensed to the hungry;
Over-indulgently on feast days I’ve drunk and eaten both;
And sometimes sat so long that I slept and ate at once.
「我,貪吃」他開始說:『承認我有以下的罪:
我經常以上帝和祂身邊的聖人起誓,
但其實大多數的時候我其實並不需要把上帝搬出來⋯⋯
我每餐都把吃超量,有時候才中午我就已經吃得很多,
然後,走不到一哩路,又已經全部都消化完了。
我還會把其實可以留下來分給肚子餓的人吃的東西全部浪費掉。
在有大餐吃的日子我毫不節制得吃吃喝喝,
有時候坐在同一個地方吃得太久,還會一邊吃著一邊睡著⋯⋯」
os: 自己覺得自己有時候也有一種犯了貪吃病的感覺,一下子想吃這個一下子想吃那個。一直都認為貪吃這種毛病是很私人,不會對別人造成影響的壞習慣。不過,也許真的並非如此。在節制自己食慾的同時,其實也是在訓練自己如何控制自己的各種欲望。而這也是鍛鍊自己成為一個更好的人的機會。
