1860-1949」(A MIRACLE IN TIME: An exhibition about the Kinmenese diaspora and the idea of home)是「再會/繪僑鄉」金門縣2014年全國古蹟展的活動之一,以歷史物件、訪談錄音和老照片作為展出主軸,講述20世紀初為數眾多的金門人離鄉打拼的故事。

My father, though having returned for a while, left us eventually. He never took care of our family. I dare say that I have never used any of my father’s money in my whole life. Not a penny. I never got the chance to know what he did over there in Southeast Asia. He had never sent any letters, not to mention money. The only letter was received out of the blue in my second year in high school, saying he planned to return. Can you imagine how I felt then? I had no idea what he had been doing all those years. He probably worked for some people, sometimes as a…Sometimes I believe the reason why he never sent money home was because he had another family, and other children…It turned out there were four of them.
[⋯]
I grew up with my grandparents (two grandmas) and my mother. My grandfather would do farm work in the mountains, and my grandmothers would go to the sea to collect oysters. The crops were good, and the oysters were in abundance and sold well. My mother would stay at home, cooking and doing chores.
My mother felt sorry for herself. She was a very traditional woman. She never showed her feelings outright, but was rather resigned. Still, she would blame my father and shed tears. She was so young, in her twenties, as you can imagine. She made a poem and often recited it in a low voice: “Shue-xiong Cai from Qiong-lin village / has a heart of stone / He went to Southeast Asia and never came back / leaving his family behind in Kinmen.”
My memories of that time stayed with my mom, and with her poem. This is the story of my father going to Southeast Asia for a better life. And this is also the story of how our family broke apart.
